“Unexpected Additional Charges Just Before Anesthesia & Poor Communication That Led to Serious Problems” I underwent scar revision surgery after developing significant scarring following postoperative inflammation from my original surgery at Wonjin. After the surgery, I was instructed to keep surgical tape over the wound despite the hot and humid weather. I became concerned because excessive sweating was building up under the tape, so I asked the consultation manager whether I should remove it. She told me to keep it on without consulting the surgeon. Later, the surgeon informed me that I should have removed the tape earlier. I believe this miscommunication contributed to the inflammation that eventually resulted in significant scarring and the need for revision surgery. While I appreciate the surgeon’s willingness to perform the revision, I was disappointed by the hospital’s overall communication and informed consent process. The biggest issue was that, after my IV had already been inserted and just before anesthesia, I was suddenly asked whether I wanted to pay extra for a scar-minimizing injection (Revitalex). This additional treatment and cost had never been explained during my consultations. I was then asked to sign for the extra charge immediately before anesthesia, and the payment was collected after surgery while I was still groggy from anesthesia and preparing to leave. I do not believe patients should be asked to make financial decisions under those circumstances. Communication between departments was also poor. I was repeatedly asked the same questions about my medications by different staff members, yet when I later asked how to manage those medications after surgery, no one could give me a clear answer. I also received contradictory instructions. I was told to wash my face and remove all sunscreen before surgery, even though my procedure was not on my face. Later, another staff member told me that washing my face had not been necessary.-another proof they don’t have internal communication which doesn’t consider each patient. I hope the hospital improves its communication, coordination, and informed consent process so future patients receive complete information before surgery—not in the operating room or while recovering from anesthesia.
